A short history of Aufguss

Aufguss grew out of the public sauna culture of German-speaking Central Europe, where the sauna has long been a communal gathering place. Where the Nordic tradition is quiet and self-directed, Aufguss is led: a sauna master choreographs the heat, the aroma and the breath into a single shared experience. The word itself simply means “infusion”: the pour of water over the stones.

Over the last two decades it has grown into a discipline of its own. The Aufguss World Championship has drawn competitors from more than thirty countries since 2014, with masters bringing music, choreography and storytelling to the towel. What you experience with us is that same European tradition, brought to the heart of the Singapore CBD.

Our sauna, made for Aufguss

Aufguss only works in a room built for it. Our Premium Finnish sauna runs at 85°C, a touch below the dry-heat room on purpose, because once the Aufgussmeister begins the infusions the steam makes the heat feel far more intense. The room was shaped with the ritual in mind, so the aromatic steam gathers and then carries evenly across every bench when the towel work begins.

The venue for the full, authentic experience

A real Aufguss is more than water on stones. Ours is the complete ritual: pure essential oils chosen for the session, three to four infusions building in waves, full towel choreography that carries the heat to you, and a cold plunge waiting for the moment you step out. It is theatre and deep relaxation in equal measure, and it is meant to be shared, the rising heat, the collective breath, the relief at the end.

We were Singapore’s first venue built specifically for this, one minute from Raffles Place MRT. You can simply sit in the heat, or give yourself over to the whole ceremony.

How to enjoy it, and what it gives you

Getting the most from a session: arrive a few minutes early and warm up in the heat before the infusions begin. Hydrate well beforehand: you will sweat. When the towel work starts, breathe slowly and let the aromatic steam in rather than tensing against it. Heat rises, so a lower bench is the gentler seat, and you are always free to step out. Follow the heat with the cold plunge: the contrast is the point.

What people take from it: a heavy, deeply relaxed calm afterwards, the aroma still on your skin; a proper sweat; and the particular lift of having done it together with a room full of people. Many describe it as the easiest wind-down they keep coming back to. Everyone is different: these are the things guests tell us, not promises about what will happen for you.

Our lineage

Our Aufguss is led by Aufguss.it-certified Aufgussmeisters, trained through the Italian school of Aufguss. The craft was brought to us by its founders, Riccardo Marzi and Enrico Ganassin, both Aufguss World Championship competitors; Enrico the 2014 world runner-up in singles, Riccardo twice a team-podium finisher (3rd, 2014 & 2016). They set the specification our Aufguss sauna was built to, broke ground on our Singapore programme, and ran the very first sessions in this room themselves. We now run our own Aufguss school here, its training designed and taught by Aufguss.it. It means the ritual you experience here is not improvised; it follows the form, the safety and the craft of the European tradition, performed by people trained in it.

Founded with Riccardo Marzi & Enrico Ganassin

Our Aufguss is taught to us by Riccardo Marzi and Enrico Ganassin, the founders of Aufguss.it and Aufguss World Championship competitors. Enrico was runner-up in the world (2nd in the singles at the 2014 Aufguss World Championship); Riccardo has twice taken the World Championship team podium (3rd, 2014 & 2016). They set the specification this sauna was built to, then broke ground on our Singapore programme themselves, running the first Aufguss session in this room and performing for our very first clients.

The school we run here follows the form, safety and craft they teach.

Aufgussmeister Elisa (currently competing, ranked 3rd in Italy in 2025 and 4th in 2026) has been our resident master for three months, bringing competition-floor craft to every session. She is with us through early July.
