Breathing Differently: What Hyperbaric Oxygen Actually Does

Here is what a hyperbaric session actually does: it dissolves extra oxygen straight into your blood plasma, a real, measurable change in how oxygen moves through your body. Start with how oxygen normally travels, and the shift becomes clear.

Almost all the oxygen in your blood travels locked onto haemoglobin, inside red blood cells. Those cells act like tiny ferries, carrying oxygen from lung to tissue and back again. It is a beautifully efficient system, and under normal conditions it keeps your arterial oxygen saturation humming at around 98%, very close to maximum.

Now add a little pressure. Once you are inside a pressurised chamber breathing pure oxygen, something different happens: Henry's Law kicks in. More oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma, the liquid itself, not just the red blood cells. This is real, measurable, established physics. It happens every session. Your blood is carrying more dissolved oxygen than it normally would, a state called hyperoxia.

That is the foundation of everything in hyperbaric oxygen: elegant, measurable, and happening every session.

What that extra dissolved oxygen does in a healthy body

Here is the curious part.

The extra dissolved oxygen in your plasma means oxygen can now reach further from each capillary, diffusing a little deeper into the surrounding tissue than it would under normal atmospheric conditions. In a healthy, well-circulated body this is a modest effect, because healthy tissue is generally not short of oxygen to begin with. Your cells make energy on demand. The limiting factor is not how much oxygen is available but how much the cells actually need in the moment.

This is the interesting nuance: more oxygen does not simply equal more cellular energy in people who are already well. In a healthy body, haemoglobin is already almost fully saturated and the mitochondria that make energy are limited by how much energy the cells are using, not by how much oxygen is on hand. What the dissolved oxygen does instead is provide a gentle shift in the body's biochemical environment, a mild oxidative signal that some researchers think may prompt the body to upregulate its own antioxidant response systems (Fratantonio 2021, a small mechanistic pilot at a pressure close to ours). Think of it less as flooding cells with fuel and more as a light cue the body may notice and adapt to.

The summary: the physics is solid, the dissolved oxygen rise is real, and the downstream effects in healthy people at a gentle pressure are modest and interesting rather than dramatic. The physics of the hour is well understood; the wellness-level evidence at this mild pressure is still developing.

Our sessions: a gentle, wellness-level version

House Longevity runs its sessions at 1.5 ATA, a pressure that is deliberately gentle, well within the range that makes a session safe, repeatable, and enjoyable as a regular part of a wellness routine. It is a calm, restful session.

At this pressure you will notice the environment before anything else: the soft sound of the chamber pressurising, a brief need to equalise your ears (exactly like descending in a plane), and then a calm, enclosed space where there is genuinely nothing to do except rest. Most members lie down. Some read. Many simply close their eyes.

The measurable effect during the session, the rise in dissolved plasma oxygen, is real. The experience of the session is restful. These two things together are what we offer.

A note on what to wear and bring: cotton clothing only inside the chamber, no electronics, no lotions or perfumes. Pure oxygen in an enclosed space means fire-safety rules apply, and we take them seriously. We also screen for ear and sinus conditions before your first session. Pressure changes affect the middle ear, and some people need to take things slowly to begin with.

What members tell us they feel

These are member accounts, not promised outcomes. Individual experience varies. Some members feel a pronounced shift; others feel something subtler. We share these because they come up consistently, not because any study establishes them as guaranteed effects in every healthy person.

What members most commonly describe:

Several members who use our chamber as part of a broader recovery routine describe it as the session they notice most when they skip it. Others come primarily for the rest and find everything else a pleasant addition.

Individual experiences vary. This is a wellness service, not a medical treatment.

The science, examined

For the curious: a clean look at the mechanisms most commonly discussed around hyperbaric oxygen, assessed against what a gentle 1.5 ATA wellness session realistically engages.

Mechanism What it does (plain) What our session realistically engages
Henry's Law: dissolved plasma O₂ More oxygen dissolves directly into blood plasma under pressure Real and present every session. Your arterial oxygen rises measurably during the session. Established physics.
Extended oxygen diffusion Higher dissolved O₂ lets oxygen reach a little further from each capillary into surrounding tissue Mechanistically real; the gain is modest in healthy, well-perfused tissue.
Mild oxidative signal → antioxidant response The body notices the rise in oxygen and may upregulate its own antioxidant enzyme systems in response Small mechanistic pilot evidence at a pressure close to ours (Fratantonio 2021); early and modest, not an established outcome. Interesting biology.
Hyperoxic vasoconstriction Mild vessel constriction under elevated oxygen The physics exists; its practical effect in healthy, non-injured tissue at our pressure is small.
Ear / sinus pressure Pressure changes affect the middle ear and sinuses Real and the most common effect at this pressure (Front Med 2023); we screen for it and teach you to equalise. Worth knowing before your first session.

The table's message: the dissolved oxygen effect is real and present at every session. We deliver oxygen at an elevated pressure as a wellness experience, using the same physics, Henry's Law, that medical hyperbaric chambers rely on. What we offer is the genuine, measurable rise in dissolved oxygen and the calm, screens-off hour that comes with it.
